PUBLIC SAFETY.

The solar projects, waterpower facilities and high voltage power lines
that we work on and around daily are surrounded by beautiful land and bodies of water.
Helping to ensure our neighbours, community members and visitors have
the information they need to enjoy nearby spaces safely and responsibly is our goal.

HYDROPOWER

DAMS

The hydropower facilities, or dams, that North Shore Power Group operates are on the Blind River Water Shed and all three are operated as "Run-of-the-River" plants.

With larger dams, some of the hazards around them are easily visible. The dams we operate have lower structures and low head in comparison, but can be equally or more hazardous, as the hazards are not always easy to spot. For this reason, we wanted to provide safety tips for the public to use when near these areas.

GENERAL SAFETY:

  • Respect all signs, booms and buoys.

  • Do not go between the dam and the boom, as that is the danger zone.

  • Always stay a safe distance from the dam structure, both upstream and downstream, as water levels can change unexpectedly.

  • Be aware of floating debris, concealed hazards (underwater) and sudden changes in levels.

  • You can contact the dam operator before you visit the area to inquire about water levels, flow rates and any planned releases.

  • In the winter, changing water levels and currents can create dangerous ice formations around dams, so avoid activities on nearby ice, including ice fishing, walking, etc.
